Soul beings ... not human beings!
Related to country: France

Translations available in: English (original) | German

A human solution to a human problem is bound to fail because it comes from the heart of humanity - which is selfish.

But a soulful solution to a human problem is bound to succeed, because the soul does not have a self.

Naked Cinema ... Naked Art?
Related to country: United States

I saw a bit of an interview with the film director Sally Potter.

I was intrigued to hear about her latest film "Rage" in which she said she wanted to create what she called "naked cinema" ... no tricks, no CGI, no gimmics, virtually no props ... just the actors acting.

I was especially "wowed" by the clip with Jude Law ... incredible ... entertaining and challenging and ... so, so refreshing.

What touched me by seeing this clip was the idea that pure drama can not only be still very effective - without the need for special effects (that is if the actor is good of course!) ... it also encouraged me to think that visual art also has the same intense potential to create a story that penetrates deep into the psyche.

So I now have a growing desire and passion to look into the idea of creating an image that will tell a specific story ... a story that will be easily read, but more importantly will either entertain or challenge or touch the viewer ... without using any clever trickery, or employing special techniques, or seeking to find an innovation - just pure draughtsmanship.

Therefore, I would like to investigate the idea of simple visual storytelling ...so as I progress I'll either post the work here or on my website surrealism.wanttopaint.com

I am the Lord of the Rings ...

... Well, I am trying to be!

I am referring to Meister Eckharts wonderfully contemporary description on employing the six powers of the soul (even though he lived in the 14th century!!

... truly a man ahead of his time).

In order to fully understand what he was saying though, I think that if I am going to really change the world then I need to grasp Eckhart's philosophy of

the soul.

According to Eckhart we are comprised of two elements loosely within one entity ... the body and the soul.

For most people it appears that very early on in their lives (and I include myself here) they acquired the humanistic approach to life - the life of the

body. As children they were taught that humans need to work, earn (or steal) money, acquire things like cars, wives - or husbands, houses, children, more

money, power, land, even more money ... and basically strive to be "successful" ... even to the detriment of their peers or, in fact, ANY other human being.

As a member of the human race I understand this ... I do not agree with it now ... but I see this EVERYWHERE.

Eckhart saw the need for people to be educated in regard to the things of the soul as well as the things of the body. Such teaching would offer a balance, an

understanding, and, in Eckharts view, a far more powerful life, fuller life, innovative life, invigorating life, creative life ...

If the soul could be understood in relationship with the body then that human would come to experience what could be regarded today either as a super-human

... or a real wizard!!

Eckhart saw that in being taught the vital teachings for the body AND the soul this would mean a greater ability to know and use (appropriately) all the

powers on offer from the soul.

What was MOST important was that the body should realise precisely what its roll was ... a crucial vehicle for the soul.

The body would need to know about how to survive in any given situation. That would mean learning to be strong and fit, how to assess any situation, how to

be creative with any given material, to be able to utilise all that was available in nature.

At the same time the body needed to allow the soul to "do" what it want to do. The body would need to learn how to hear the soul ... or more specifically,

the body would need to RELATE to the soul ... and it must be on the soul's terms - not the body's.

Therefore, the body would need to know EVERYTHING about the soul ... by relating to her. This is the greatest challenge for me.

Yet, I already know that the soul WILL impart things pertaining to herself ... IF I allow her to "speak" to me.

This is where the rings comes into the mix ...

Change the World - Cut Your Toenails!
Related to country: United States

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Is this a trite joke?

Am I trying to be clever?

Do I really believe that by cutting my toenails I will actually change the world!!?

Well, my first answer is "no", my second "no", and my third a resounding "YES!"

At the same time I am not saying that ONLY cutting my toenails will change the world.

Cutting toenails is part of the fundamental law (which for a lot of the time I fail to keep ... but I try) that places the body in the appropriate relationship with the soul.

If the body, in obedience and subjection to the soul, can keep itself as fit and able as possible - then the soul can exercise her right to experience whatever it is that has brought her to this place.

THEN all manner of things will change ... first within the human experience, then followed closely by creative practical revelation via the soul (which is one of the reasons why I produce abstract and surreal art ... but that is another blog - later).

The first trick is for my body, that is my human experience, to come to understand that I am both body AND soul (although I am speaking of one entity!).

The next trick is for my body to realise that the soul has so much MORE to give to this world than the body could ever think of.

The body is only thinking in a bodily way (most of the time) so is therefore very restricted in anything truly creative or innovative.

The soul, on the other hand, is not only freely available to each of us ... but is, I believe, the very conduit by which ALL things creative come into this world. If the body allows it - does not hamper it ... then the soul will be free to act out what I call "the steps towards the labyrinth" ... this is the acutely creative journey towards the source of the soul (which is also the souls primary, if not only, goal on this plain), where the purist of abstraction reigns (another subject I will talk about later ... unless you want a sneak preview which you will find on my website ... go to my profile).

But how can I live out all this? Simple. By being the Lord of the Rings! ...

Change the world ... DO NOTHING!!!
Related to country: United States

Although I believe in the "butterfly wing-beat theory" I prefer to try and "do" something to change this beautiful but terrible world by showing my pictures to people.

My mentor, Meister Eckhart - a 14th century philosopher and mystic, taught that the world could be totally changed by "being" rather than "doing" !!!

Let me say straight away that he was NOT proposing that we should all do nothing. Instead, he was advocating adopting a totally and, in my view, innovative attitude towards our own lives - and our relationships with others.

In a world wracked with materialism, capitolism ... and out-and-out greed he wanted people to understand how to live completely satisfying lives by ... contentment!!

The biblical Paul said that he was "content in everything" ... Eckhart echoed this sentiment by talking about a true enigma ... he exhorted people to be ... uncreative!!

Before you retort angrily please think about what is being said here. He did not mean that we should be inactive ... he was saying that we should seek to go back towards the time before we were taught how to be materialist etc ... he wanted us to see the purety of what it can be like to be without all things ... to be as an unborn child!!

As an abstract artist this is perfect inspiration for me ... this is totally ... abstract!! So ALL my work can be seen as a personal means to travel such a unique, and richly blessed, path.

I would very much like to say more later ... if anyone is interested.

If you are not then at least have a look at what kind of inspiration I live by ... in my attempt at changing the world!! ... the website? www.ablot.com
